Spirit of House Afternoon Special Feat. Alton MIller (Detroit)

Our House Sydney & Soul Of Sydney are proud to present one of the true pioneers of House music, ALTON MILLER (DETROIT, USA). Due to overwhelming popular demand following his Australian performances last year, Alton is back! He showed his innovation and ingenuity as a producer also extended into his DJ’ing as he seemlessly married House with his Disco Funk influences.

Alton’s musical roots are deeply connected with Detroit’s legendary club ‘The Music Institute’ which he co-founded with George Baker and Chez Damier (http://dopejams.net/index.php?p=prod…t_version=true). His trip also coincides with the release of his latest single “Waiting For You” (http://soundcloud.com/kingsofgroove/…aiting-for-you) which has attracted praise from the likes of Osunlade, Glenn Underground and Black Coffee.

So we are extremely excited to be able to have him playing a special Sunday afternoon ‘Spirit of House’ set in the open air grassed courtyard of Hermann’s Bar at Sydney University.

Expect an afternoon of exceptional music from an extraordinary talent including an eclectic mix of Deep & Soulful Motor City House flavors as well as a solid dose of the Soul & Disco Funk that has shaped and influenced his career as a Producer & DJ.

ALTON MILLER
Growing up in the 1970s, Miller soaked up the musical environment surrounding him in the Motor City, taking a particular interest in the sounds of Motown, Philadelphia, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Santana. It was during the early ’80s once the “dance music crazed” Alton became friends with a young Derrick May that he decided to start spinning records, citing Chicago DJs such as Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles as prime influences.

By the latter part of the same decade, Miller joined forces with George Baker and Chez Damier to start the Music Institute, a short-lived but legendary Detroit club that has since become near-mythical, thanks to the pioneering techno efforts of figures such as May. Following the demise of The Music Institute, Miller took an interest in Conga drumming in addition to DJing, which led to a period between 1989 and 1991 where he toured the world with his music.

He then joined forces once again with May, first as an employee of the artist’s Transmat Records label, then as Aphrodisiac, the title under which he would begin releasing his music. Besides his EP on Transmat’s sublabel Fragile, he also released his music on Kevin Saunderson’s KMS and a series of EPs on Serious Grooves. By the mid to late ’90s, he had increased his presence in the Detroit area through a number of DJ performances and a stream of stunning twelves. His latest album ‘Light Years Away’ had been critically acclamied by the likes of Osunlade, Atjazz and Boddhi Satva

SPIRIT OF HOUSE #1: THE STREET PARTY MARCH 18th

In what was a special day, Our House Sydney teamed up with good friends Soul Of Sydney to bring its first installment of  the “Spirit Of House” Block Parties. These parties allow us to pay special tribute to 30+ years of House music and its Funk & Disco roots in FREE family friendly & PEOPLE FRIENDLY out-door locations including car parks, lane-ways, parks, roof-tops and warehouse spaces around town.

The Venue: As you can see in the picture, we didn’t end up in the park for the House Picnic as we originally intended due to some ominous clouds and some pretty temperamental Sydney weather. We did however set up our Sound in this dope inner-city Car Park location smack bang between a Chinese Temple and 3 buildings.

One for the House faithful for sure! Thank you for the support kids and look out for us doing it all again very very soon! Big luv to everyone who came down and especially the DJ’s who donated their time like true champions! Look out for them playing around town; Phil Toke (Our House Sydney), James Scott (Co-Op), Phil Hudson, Agey, Ronney Farah (Shicago Bar) & Queen Shirene D’silva (Everywhere they play good music !)

Mile High Club & Paul Strange presents TODD TERRY (NYC) @ Goldfish Kings Cross

Catch Our House Sydney’s DJ’s supporting House music legend, Todd Terry.

Goldfish & Mile High Club are proud to announce the GODFATHER of house TODD TERRY (X-Mix Productions/NYC)Grammy Award nominated DJ/Producer Todd Terry has been engulfed in dance music since he first started listening to European dance music records while growing up in Brooklyn. Already devoted to turntables, he heard something different in those tracks, and he “went for the difference. I never got a break in New York, but England happened right away, so I catered to them.” In any event, the Todd Terry sound was born.

By 1988, Todd Terry hit big in England and Europe, and his notoriety was making its way back to the U.S. In addition to DJ appearances, Todd was cutting his classic underground tracks A Day In The Life, Weekend, and Can You Party, released under monikers such as the Todd Terry Project, House Of Gypsies, and Royal House, all considered essential and ground breaking. In the mid 90’s, the Ministry of Sound’s eponymous UK label released A Day In The Life, a collection of Todd Terry tracks that had been causing dance floor panic. That then led the way to a deal with Mercury Records allowing him to set up a context in which to work with his favourite singers and performers. The first release, Keep On Jumpin’ on featured a vocal workout from super-divas Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown, together for the first time ever. The song became a top 10 UK crossover pop hit and worldwide smash. Todd followed with the anthem ‘Somethin Going On’, a top 5 UK crossover pop hit.

All the while, Todd continued to break new ground as a Producer/Remixer. From SNAP to Annie Lennox to George Michael to Bjork, Todd’s mixes bridge the ground between club cool and commercial accessibility. In 1995, his remix for Everything But The Girl’s Missing became a worldwide smash, giving the British duo their first ever hit. He then rode the charts with mixes for Garbage (Stupid Girl), The Cardigans (Love Fool), Everything But The Girl (Wrong), 10,000 Maniacs (More Than This), Jamiroquai (Alright), The Cardigans (Been It), and The Lightning Seeds (You Showed Me),.among others. He also produced a Robin S track (Givin’ You All That I’ve Got) for the multi-platinum Space Jam soundtrack.

INK/Distinctive Records 2005 release The Todd Terry Trilogy: Past, Present & Future on 3 x CD & 10 x 12” vinyl has inspired Todd fans both old and new with over 30 Todd classics and 10 new Todd songs. Todd is also releasing a barrage of new singles on Blanco y Negro, Elementary Group, and Manifesto/Mercury (who are also re-releasing the ‘Keep On Jumpin’ and ‘Somethin Going On’ in 2006). Ministry of Sound has licensed Philippe B Vs. Todd Terry ‘Can You Feel It (Can You Party)’ for a major 2006 release, a new version of the Todd classic Royal House ‘Can You Party’.

Todd Terry All Stars feat. Kenny Dope, DJ Sneak, Terry Hunter, & Tara McDonald’s ‘Get Down’ was released in 2007 on Strictly Rhythm. This red hot single is the first proper original release on the re-launched legendary label.

‘Strictly Todd Terry’ compilation mixed by Todd Terry was released in 2007 on Strictly Rhythm. Todd’s mix follows installments by Masters at Work and Tiefschwarz in this newly launched series.

Todd is one of the world’s most celebrated figures in dance music. With almost two decades of dance floor domination under Todd’s belt the quality of his productions goes from strength to strength. Welcome to the church of house music presided over by Todd the God. Are you a believer?

Prince Sydney Tour Tribute: Prince – The One (Timmy Regisford & Adam Rios Remix)

With Prince embarking on his Australian Tour this year, we thought it would be appropriate to post a remix of his track “The One”. Its difficult to remix a Prince track and leave it having some dignity, but Timmy Regisford and Adam Rios do a great job here.

CHICAGO HOUSE CLASSIC: Colonel Abrams – Trapped (1985)

Colonel Abrams moved with his family to New York City when he was ten years old due to his father (a construction worker) getting a job there. The family moved to the East Village in Manhattan on East 13 Street. From an early age, he began playing the guitar and piano. He was in several early bands, among them was Heavy Impact which he played both guitar and keyboards, Joe Webb (guitar), Lemar Washington (guitar), Marston Freeman (bass guitar), Ronald Simmons (drums), and Barbara Mills (saxophone). Later he formed Conservative Manor (mid-1970s), 94 East (the band featuring Prince on lead guitar), and the New Jersey band Surprise Package.

Hits in the mid-1980s including “Leave the Message Behind the Door” and “Music Is the Answer” established him as a solo artist, initially in Europe and later in the US.[2] In 1985 he signed to Steven Machat”s Label/Production company, AMI. Machat, who was working with the New Zealand producer Richard Burgess and hired him against conventional wisdom to produce Colonel Abrams for his company the album Colonel Abrams. Machat then talked MCA into signing the Colonel recordings to have them released throughout the world. AMI also at this time had Ready for the World and the New Edition/Bobby Brown with MCA. This collaboration with the British producer Richard James Burgess produced the hits “Trapped“, “I’m Not Gonna Let You” and urban contemporary ballad “Table for Two”.

“Trapped” reached the top five and went gold in the UK Singles Chart and topped the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1985,[3] followed by the Colonel Abrams album, which spent two weeks at number one the following year. It was estimated by the Phonographic Association that “Trapped” sold over 5 million copies worldwide by spring 1987. An electronic remix of “Trapped” was later released in 1995 by Boards of Canada under the pseudonym Hell Interface. A new version of “Trapped” (“Trapped 2006”) was released in the UK.

“I’m Not Gonna Let You” also spent a week at number one in the dance chart in 1986. The album peaked at number 75 on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart and number 13 on the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Abrams had a number of entries on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart in the 1980s and 1990s, including four entries that hit number one. In 1987 he had his fourth number-one U.S. dance hit with “How Soon We Forget“, the same year that he released his second album, You and Me Equals Us.

On January 9, 2007, Colonel Abrams released the single “Just When You Thought.” It became the third single released on his own record label, Colonel Records, the others being “Heartbreaker” and “Let Us All Be Friends”. On April 2, 2007, Colonel also released a dance smash called “Never Be”. In 2007, Abrams released “Just Like Mathematics” and “True Stories”. . June 2008 saw the release of his single, “Only a Few”. The Colonel will be performing at the 80s Reunion in August 2011.
